FAME’s Beginnings

The Panhandle Area Educational Consortium’s FloridaLearns Academy Math Experts (FAME) Project is one of a small number of grants recently awarded in Florida under the program title: Math Matters: A New Vision for Florida and under the authority of the Mathematics and Science Partnerships (84.366B). The budget for this PAEC effort was approved on December 20, 2006 and the project runs through August 30, 2007.

This grant was written under the leadership of Paula Lovett Waller and Tony Anderson for the purpose of improving mathematical achievement of students in grades 6 - 8 in participating school districts. It is important for students to develop thought processes and skills that will result in meeting the Sunshine State Standards and becoming lifelong learners and competent users of mathematics.

Districts participating in the FAME Project include: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, FAMU, Franklin, FSUS, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, Wakulla, Walton and Washington. Principals from 6 - 8 schools in these districts will be eligible to select two mathematics instructors to participate in the FAME trainings which will take place in the spring and summer of 2007. Principals will submit the names of the educators they select to their district Professional Development Director.

Each participant will receive 12 days of content and technology training during which time he/she will receive a laptop computer, software, a projector, a graphing calculator and a smart pad for use in his/her classroom. In addition, each participant will receive a stipend for the 10 days of summer training that will be held June 10th - 22nd in four locations across the Panhandle.

The Three Significant Goals of the FAME Project are:

1. Develop a rigorous training curriculum using the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum Focal Points as the foundation; with integrated connections to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and the Florida Sunshine State Standards as the supporting structural grid of the curriculum.

2. Provide high quality professional development to teachers of students in grades 6-8 enabling them as proficient, confident, expert math educators.

3. Develop assessment tools that will formatively and summatively assess teachers’ knowledge of mathematics.

Why is the FAME Grant Needed?

Across the state, middle-school students exhibited a dismal lack of understanding of the five strands of mathematics tested on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in 2006. The performance of middle-school students in the high-need districts represented by PAEC in the FAME Project reflected the same poor understanding of mathematics concepts. Thirteen of the participating districts scored lower than the state average in the out of the five strands tested. Data from 2006 FCAT coupled with district data on the number of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch and the number of highly-qualified teachers employed in the high need districts included in this proposal verify that the district submitting this proposal as well as the vast majority of the additional participating districts qualify as “high-need”.
